Pierre Marly and Jean François Rey, two French eyewear makers who revolutionized the world of eyewear

At Seconde Vue, we make it a point of honor to select the highest quality vintage glasses possible and at the cutting edge of fashion. Sometimes discreet, sometimes exuberant, the Seconde Vue selection tends to appeal to everyone and all styles. From small rectangular 90's style glasses to the largest "fly" frames from the 70's, we have a wide retro choice that will delight all generations.

Nothing new: fashion is an eternal restart. And in composing our collections, we realized that two French designers had literally shaken up the codes of the world of eyewear. Unique frames in tune with the times.

Pierre Marly, the genius of glasses from the 50s

Back in the 50s, uniformity seemed to be the watchword of fashion, and more specifically of glasses and sunglasses. In fact, at that time, there were only two or three shapes of glasses, most of which were in tortoiseshell. These were more like a prosthesis than a trendy item.

A great creative, the monotony of all these frames exasperated the designer Pierre Marly, who decided to intervene to bring more style and different designs to the world of optics. It is for these reasons that on February 9, 1951 Pierre Marly decided to open his first eyewear store with innovative and unique shapes for the time.

We can then distinguish three major stylistic signatures of the French designer.

Pierre Marly's crazy-sized vintage glasses, available at Seconde Vue

Pierre Marly was above all recognizable for the exaggerated dimensions of his glasses. Unheard of at the time because Pierre Marly wanted glasses to become a new fashion accessory. And how to transform them into an unmissable accessory? By imagining them in an XXL version. It is also thanks to him and his vision of optics that Audrey Hepburn caused a sensation in the film "Charade" by Stanley Donan. The American actress wore a model created specifically for her and its unusual size provoked unanimous approval from fashion critics, who called it the "New Look", like the silhouettes of the young designer Christian Dior. A first stroke of genius for Pierre Marly who immediately became known to the press thanks to this film.

The unique shapes and bright colors of Pierre Marly's frames

Shortly after this dazzling success, Pierre Marly continued his momentum by designing a pair for Sophia Laurens, recognizable by a thousand thanks to its shape inspired by a television screen. With this model, Pierre Marly met with a second immediate success because his "Sophia" model still remains the brand's best-selling model today.

Finally, how can we talk about Pierre Marly without talking about color? With collections that are each more vibrant than the last and his unique designs, Marly definitely wants to take eyewear out of monotony and make it a fashion accessory in its own right. Thus, he will become the first “optician who dresses the eyes of all of Paris”.

Pierre Marly, the cutting edge of the avant-garde available at Seconde Vue

Thanks to his vision and talent, Pierre Marly very quickly became the reference for eyewear in the 60s. Many stars placed their trust in him, including Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Polnareff, Romy Schneider, Madonna, Lino Ventura and Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.

At Seconde Vue, one of our most iconic vintage pairs is by Pierre Marly. Mauve and blue, these fly glasses immediately enhance any outfit, while bringing a touch of humor and style!

The story of Jean-François Rey, a leading designer to be found in the Seconde Vue boutique

JF Rey is above all a story of family and love. Always immersed in the world of optics, Jean-François Rey first made his mark in the family factory in the Jura. It was then accompanied by his wife, Joëlle Rey, that the French designer decided to launch his brand in 1995. These two lovers of contemporary design combine know-how and originality by creating unique frames made of materials such as wood, leather or carbon fiber. All made using innovative techniques, thus revealing high-end, different and lasting creations.

JF Rey's signature style

At Jf Rey we find a real work of materials, in order to offer particularly light, elegant and comfortable frames. All their models are exclusively made in their own factory in the Jura. Joëlle, the designer's wife, mainly takes care of the color of the collections, greatly participating in the DNA of the brand. The shapes, as for them, are thought out as a team and evolve over the collections in order to fit in as best as possible with the times.

"Thinking outside the box, taking risks and innovating is a daily leitmotif. We want to bring something extra to the glasses, especially in movement, when the person wearing them moves with them," the designer explained in an interview.

Timeless vintage frames of rare quality, which you can now find in our boutique and on our Seconde Vue website.

The different brands of JF Rey

In order to conquer the hearts of as many people as possible, JF Rey decided to create several brands:

  • BOZ, a unisex brand and certainly the most fashionable, creative and cutting-edge of the designer.
  • VOLTE FACE, intended mainly for women thanks to its marked and detailed shapes.
  • PETITE, for thin faces and small heads.
  • KIDS & TEENS: intended for children between 4 and 16 years old.

At Seconde Vue, we have a large collection of vintage frames by BOZ. Unique and innovative glasses that will allow you to perfect and " pimp " any look.
